Beginnings that Disguise Themselves as Endings

April 27, 2022

Kaia is a 20 year old girl who is fresh off of losing her father. Overwhelmed with the grayness in her life she impulsively decides to leave on her own because she figures anywhere else is better than there. She packs her bags and leaves for  a week-long trip to Chile, without telling anyone. Unfortunately, for her case, trying to run away from her problems puts in her an entire array of new ones when her backpack is mistakenly switched with another girl’s. In her haste to make her flight she does not notice and boards, landing her across the world in Queensland, Australia. Stranded with none of her documents, she gets dropped off at a hostel named similarly to the one she had booked in Chile. At Paradise Surf Hostel guests come and go, but a team of 5 keeps the place running, Molly, Keenan, Rip, Reef, and Arena. They all live a unique lifestyle, spending their days surfing and their nights with one another, cherishing the simple but usually underrated moments of being fully present and peaceful. They have lots of interesting views on life, love, loss, etc, which they share openly with Kaia throughout her experience with them. She then meets Luke, the brother of the backpack switch. She is immediately taken aback by his charm and his ease in being vulnerable, something that is extremely difficult for her. She continues to learn from the new people around her and begins to understand the irony that the only way to stop feeling so numb is to fully feel it all for once. It is here where she learns how to accept her pain and how to continue life after loss.  Ultimately, the last place she believes she should be, becomes the place where she becomes more of herself than ever before.
